The 500-year-old, Grade I listed, four-star venue has been run by its owner Spike Bastard since last year.

But he has had to hire temporary staff to ensure weddings and other functions can go ahead at the up to £150-a-night hotel in Yealmpton, Devon.

Among those who quit was Zoe Corner, 22, from Plymouth, and her mum Alison Jeffery. Zoe said: “Good luck to anyone who applies for a job here.

“Be prepared to have a bad back constantly, no money and make sure you have some good medical insurance. The whole management is a complete joke with no idea what they’re doing.”

Tom Galloway, whose wife Katie- Louise quit, said: “The stress that place caused us was unreal and I didn’t even work there.

“I’m proud of them all for standing together and any other hotel will be grateful for their hard work.”

A hotel spokesman said: “Our guests expect consistent, high standards of cleanliness and the housekeeping team were asked to meet these.”

The name Bastard dates back to 1066 and was the Norman word for a person who was born illegitimately. All modern Bastards are thought to be the descendants of Robert Bastard, who had several manors in Devon.
