New photo Politicians could learn from late US President George HW Bush’s steadfast commitment

GEORGE H.W. Bush was more than just an American President — he was a global statesman.

Alongside Western allies, none more important than the British, he helped to steer the world through the end of the Cold War, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the birth of young democracies across Eastern Europe.

And he led an international coalition to victory in the first Gulf War, after Margaret Thatcher told him it was “no time to go wobbly” and that their shared values were worth fighting for.

He was part of a group of world leaders who had the courage of their convictions and a belief in freedom and liberty, both economic and social.

The tributes paid to the President from those who worked with him in new, emerging nations show how important that faith was.

Politicians today could learn from his steadfast commitment.

History will remember him fondly.

Take responsibility

WE couldn’t agree more with Ofsted boss Amanda Spielman.

Our schools cannot become surrogate parents. They are there to teach — not to solve the obesity crisis, toilet-train kids or take knives out of teenagers’ hands.

There is a growing trend in our politics and our society to take away responsibility from individuals.

Everything from the ludicrous sugar tax to banning speakers from universities if they dare to contradict the snowflake agenda all flow from this sinister belief that we can’t be trusted to look after ourselves or make sensible decisions.

Schools being used as a catch-up service is a symptom of a culture where too often we’re told that somebody else will do it for us.

More people like Ms Spielman must come out and say enough is enough.

We must put personal responsibility back at the centre of all our lives.

Abusing the system

SPEEDBOAT killer Jack Shepherd is treating our justice system with contempt. It is staggering we’re paying for it through Legal Aid.

Politicians continually pay lip service to making changes to the legal aid system, but case after jaw-dropping case continues to come into the public eye.

It’s important that everybody has access to justice, and financial support is a key part of that. But it cannot be abused.

And it’s hard to imagine a more blatant case of that than dishing it out to a coward who refuses to answer for his crimes.
