BRITS consume a staggering 95 million cups of coffee EVERY day, according to a new study.
A nationwide study into our coffee drinking habits has found the average Brit now drinks 4 cups of coffee daily – that’s 95 million cups nationwide.
However experts warn the aluminium capsules and plastic takeaway cups we throw away each day are polluting landfill and oceans with BILLIONS of waste items every year, with the average coffee capsule taking up to 500 years to biodegrade.
The study revealed the average Brits buys 3 cups of coffee a week from high street chains, and almost three quarters (72 per cent) have NEVER used a reusable cup or flask.
And despite the growing awareness of the impact on the environment, more than HALF (51 per cent) of Brits admit they are not really bothered about the effects of their coffee habit.
Many of those polled blamed confusing terminology, with a further 56 per cent admitting they have no idea what the terms recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable even mean.
And over two thirds said they blamed the manufacturers for not clearly explaining how to dispose of cups and capsules.
Half of regular coffee drinkers use coffee capsules, and currently 95 per cent of capsules on the market are made of aluminium and plastic, which are not disposed of correctly.
In fact, less than one in five people polled (19 per cent) were aware that aluminium capsules that go to landfill can take 200 to 500 years to biodegrade.
42 per cent of capsule drinkers confess to putting their spent capsules in their everyday bin, while 40 per cent put them into the mixed recycling, which results in contamination if they are not emptied, washed out and placed into the designated recycling stream.
Nils Leonard, founder Halo Coffee said: “As a nation of coffee lovers, we’re still not committed enough to recycle cups and capsules. We’re also totally confused about how to do this effectively – recycle the lid, put the cup in the normal bin, throw the capsule in the recycling but wash it out first etc – this all needs simplifying.
“Manufacturers’ need to do more to help consumers understand what can be recycled, how and where. Or they must remove the choice completely which is what we’ve done with Halo coffee. No compromises, just the world’s best coffees, in a way that’s best for the world”.
