THE hugely anticipated heavyweight title clash between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury shockingly finished in a split decision draw.

The Bronze Bomber retained his WBC title after knocking down his British challenger twice despite spending the majority of the bout on the defensive.

Wilder ended the fight ahead on one judge’s scorecard, behind on another and level on that of Englishman Phil Edwards.

Mexican Alejandro Rochin shockingly ruled in favour of the champion at 115-111, while Canadian Robert Tapper scored 114-112 to Fury.

After the match, Fury said: “We’re on away soil, I got knocked down twice, but I still believe I won that fight.”

“I’m being a total professional here. I went to Germany to fight Klitschko and I went to America to fight Deontay Wilder. God bless America. The ‘Gypsy King’ has returned.”

Despite the majority of the boxing world admitting that Wilder had been fortunate to retain his title, the Bronze Bomber believes the result was a clear-cut victory.

Wilder said: “I think with the two knockdowns I definitely won the fight.

“We poured our hearts out tonight. We’re both warriors, but with those two drops, I think I won the fight.

“I came out slow. I rushed my punches. I didn’t sit still. I was too hesitant. I started overthrowing the right hand and I just couldn’t adjust.”
