New photo Prime Minister has been told not to dance to the EU’s tune on Irish border, as Brexit talks continue

THERESA May was last night urged not to “dance to the tune” of Brussels – as EU chiefs said a Brexit deal could be struck within weeks.

The Prime Minister was ordered to stick to her red lines and not allow meddling Eurocrats to “weaponise” the Irish border, an ex-Brexit Minister said last night.

David Jones said the electorate wouldn’t accept being tied to the bloc in a customs arrangement to avoid a hard border which could stop Britain striking new trade deals.

He said: “We have made a very fair offer to the European Union and they’re quite wrongly weaponising the Irish border.

“A free trade agreement will be good for both the EU and the UK and it’s about time they started talking sensibly on that basis.

“The UK has to rule out membership of a customs union that wouldn’t deliver Brexit.

We must not be dancing to the tune of the European Union and their negotiators.”

Discussions are on-going to avoid a hard border in Northern Ireland if agreement isn’t reached on frictionless trade at the end of 2020 which marks the end of the transition period.

The row emerged yesterday after European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said a deal between Britain and the EU was within sight.

He said: “I have reason to think that the rapprochement potential between both sides has increased in recent days.”

The moves towards an imminent agreement comes as he revealed that “we have to get away from this no deal scenario”.

Ireland’s deputy Prime Minister Simon Coveney said: “It is now time for the UK and EU’s talented negotiators to lock themselves into a room and complete the withdrawal agreement over the next two weeks.”

The two sides are working towards a divorce agreement and a political statement on a future trading relationship.

The next EU summit will start on October 17 and last two days with a special summit scheduled for November.

European Council President Donald Tusk said the deal was possible by the end of 2018 ahead of the UK formally leaving at the end of March next year.

Meanwhile, Eurosceptic Bernard Jenkin hit out at reports Theresa May was urging Labour MPs to back her deal in secret talks.

He said the move “would encourage Conservative leavers to abandon support for the government”.

A Downing Street source last night said: “We have always said we are working hard for a deal this autumn.

“However, there remain big issues to work through, and as the PM has said this will require movement on the EU side.”

EU negotiators will this week publish their response to the Chequers deal this week and are expected to turn down Mrs May’s demand for frictionless trade between Britain and Europe.

David Jones added: “It’s mysterious that just days before the EU respond they are talking up the prospect of a deal.

Some people may suggest there has been some co-ordination between Brussels and Downing Street.”
