DONALD Trump has shut down the US government because Democrats refuse to fund his border wall.
Here we reveal what he said, what the wall will look like, and how much it’ll cost.
Why did Donald Trump shut down the US Government over the Mexico border wall?
Trump had vowed to shut down the government over the wall in a fiery Oval Office meeting with Democrat leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi.
He promised he would allow a partial shutdown of the federal government if Congress does not provide £3.95billion ($5billion) to build the wall.
Senior White House adviser Stephen Miller has called it a “fundamental issue.”
When asked if the administration was willing to allow parts of the government to cease operation at midnight on Friday, December 22 if the wall is not funded, Miller answered: “If it comes to it, absolutely.”
Democrats, who have taken over the House of Representatives in January, and some fellow Republicans have insisted they will not give Trump the funding he says he needs.
Congress members met on December 27 to discuss the issue and the House and Senate will meet on December 31.
The issue of whether or not to fund the wall is what is preventing the passing of a government funding budget.
How much will the wall cost?
The US Department of Homeland Security estimates the wall will cost £17billion, according to a leaked report.
However some estimates are as high as $67billion.
Its plan says the construction should take place in three stages and be made up of both fences and walls covering around 1,000 miles.
President Trump has always insisted Mexico will pay, but Mexico’s president Enrique Pena Nieto slammed Trump’s plans and has been equally firm that his country will not be funding the project.
What will the wall look like?
One bidder for the Mexican wall contract wants to cover it with solar panels, while another wants to make a barrier big enough for a deck offering tourists scenic views of the desert.
