CORONARY heart disease is the number one UK killer and a major cause is high cholesterol – fat in the bloodstream that builds up in arteries and stops blood flow to the heart.
Ready for October, which is National Cholesterol month, we look at ways to keep levels in check. Also this week, we test gel body moisturisers.
OatWell Original
(28 day supply, £24.99, hollandandbarrett.com)
A soluble oat bran fibre called beta-glucan binds excess cholesterol within the gut to help prevent it being absorbed.
The pure natural bran powder has been scientifically proven to help reduce blood cholesterol by up to ten per cent within three weeks if you have an 11g scoop a day. It can be sprinkled into cereal or smoothies.
Freeletics exercise app
(£12.99 a month, freeletics.com)
Almost half of us think just 30 minutes of exercise per week is optimal for a healthy heart, but in fact 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic activity is needed to improve your cholesterol levels. Download the Freeletics app for motivation.
You do a fitness test and then it works out an exercise schedule for you. I like the fact you are never quite sure what schedule you will get, so it mixes things up.
Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil Blend Capsules
(£20.99 for 90 capsules, udoschoice.co.uk)
The supplement contains a blend of essential fatty acids, omega 3 and 6, and phytosterols which are found in plants and are structurally similar to cholesterol so they help block absorption into your body. Clever stuff. You take three a day.

Budget
Neutrogena, Hydro Boost Body Gel Cream
- £5.99 from lookfantastic — buy now
This ultra-lightweight gel is formulated with hyaluronic acid to lock-in moisture and leave skin soft and non-greasy.
I suffer with dry skin on my lower legs and this has been a game changer! The pump dispenser means it’s the easiest to use of the three – and a bargain buy. My favourite!
Mid
Nip + Fab, Hyaluronic Fix Body Gel
- £7.99 from nipandfab — buy now
A gel moisturiser formulated to provide intense hydration for soft and plumper looking skin.
Hyularonic acid is included to maintain moisture and firm the skin, as well as vitamin c, aloe vera and glycerine.
This was absorbed almost instantly but left a slightly tacky feeling on the skin. It was hydrating, but not as much as the budget option.
Luxury
Bio-Oil, Dry Skin Gel
- £8.99 from Superdrug — buy now
This specially formulated water-free gel contains higher levels of oil in order to lock in moisture. Contains natural hyaluronic acid and glycerine.
It feels light and absorbs quite well when applied but leaves a greasy sheen.
I didn’t mind this on the legs as it gave them a nice glow.
Smells gorgeous too, but this small tub doesn’t go far.

Hayden Panettiere
Size: 8
Age: 18
Height: 5ft 1in

To achieve her kick-ass figure, Hayden – who plays cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes – follows the ‘quartering’ rule. She eats only a quarter of the food on her plate, then waits 20 minutes before deciding whether she needs to eat again.
Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
kim cattrall
Size: 10-12
Age: 52
Height: 5ft 8in

SATC star Kim swears by gym sessions with Russian kettle bells (traditional cast-iron weights) and the South Beach Diet to give her the body she wants. To avoid overeating, Kim has a radical diet trick – squirting lemon juice on her leftovers – so she won’t carry on picking.
Kim says: “I am no super-thin Hollywood actress. I am built for men who like women to look like women.”
